Maybe the lack of dual vocal styles, which often give their songs a more interesting, adrenaline-fueled listen, or perhaps the awkward, and sometimes disorientating time signature makes it a little less listenable.
You can tell it’s definitely not ‘single material’ as Deftones plan on releasing the first official single next week, and it takes a few tries to properly get into the song, but it is worth the effort. The only major problem is the palatability of the track. You can tell the boys are very proud of this, and they expect the album to go down well too. Chino has never been one to let down his lyrical quality and it looks like he still hasn’t yet. The metaphor of showing who you really are, rather than hiding ‘Wear your insides on the outside//Show your enemy, what you look like’ fits well with Deftones statement about showing off all sides of themselves, as well as the sudden impact after the intro. Lyrically, there’s a strong sense of cohesion between what we hear, and what Chino feels. He still gives it pretty hard, but at times it feels like he’s running low on steam.
This is nothing new, as it feels much like Knife Prty from 2000 release White Pony, but when listening back to White Pony, this new song definitely shows Chino’s age.

As a live track, this could be a difficult one to enjoy.Ĭhino isn’t giving us his usual melodic vocals switching to full throttle screaming, back to melodic vocals again, but instead has opted to sing the entire song with every ounce of melody in his body. It doesn’t work as well as it could, making it hard to get into at times. The song displays a slightly off kilter time-signature which breaks up an otherwise simple riff, a very good Deftones trick they’re sticking to what they know best here, and it sort of works. The all too familiar Stephen Carpenter ‘chugging’ riff, much like Mastodon’s ‘Oblivion’ or the more famous ‘Break Stuff’ by Limp Bizkit, is present, BUT IT STILL. A warning to anyone who isn’t really paying attention to the soundscaping when the song kicks in at just past the 41 seconds mark, it can shake you up. The intro is very reminiscent of some of their earlier tracks, but a definite nod to the ’28 Days Later’ theme can be heard. The intro is a great example of what has separated Deftones from the other ‘Nu Metal’ bands they’ve been roped in within the past – The fact they’re not just a one level band.įor the first 40 seconds, Deftones lead you to believe this is one of their quieter, less aggressive songs. The swirling, peaceful intro can be seen where the modern day bands like Enter Shikari or the UK based Three Trapped Tigers get their basis from. They’re very expert soundscapers (Check the intro to Passengers if you don’t believe me) and that means they’re not always an aggressive, in your face band. Deftones are great not just for being an aggressive, ‘riff-baron’ band, but because they also have melody within the songs. When asked about the new album, Chino Moreno was quoted saying that ‘this album would be a mix of all their albums to date’ and this first offering supports that statement. This therefore will be quite an interesting follow-up. It’s been 2 years since Deftones last released their last album, which frankly, could be put level with their genre defining album White Pony (2000). Released on October 26, 1997, the album included a collaboration with singer Max Cavalera (of Sepultura/Soulfly/Cavalera Conspiracy) on 'Headup', a tribute to Cavaleras late stepson Dana Wells, to whom the album was also dedicated. Diamond Eyes also graced many other critics and readers “Best Of” lists.Let me lay a claim down before I begin this review this site will be for local, unsigned talent mainly, however, I will pepper it occasionally with releases by bands I like or interest me. Deftones second album, Around the Fur, was recorded at Studio Litho in Seattle, Washington and produced by Terry Date. The Sacramento band’s 2010 release Diamond Eyes was named iTunes’ “Rock Album of the Year,” as well as KERRANG!’s 2010 Album of the Year. The cross-country run, which also includes Scars on Broadway, will run through mid-November: four more west coast dates have just been announced.įrom their 1994 debut Adrenaline to their platinum-certified, Billboard chart-topping, Grammy-winning breakthrough album White Pony, Deftones have continually crossed-over genres, defied categorization and delivered compelling live performances around the world. To support the release, Deftones will be kicking off a US headline tour October 9 th in Ventura, CA. KOI NO YOKAN was recorded in Los Angeles, CA with Nick Raskulinecz (Alice In Chains, Foo Fighters, Rush) who also produced Diamond Eyes. “Leathers” is the first track released from the band’s seventh studio album KOI NO YOKAN, which comes out November 13 th.
